Neuropathy is a medical condition characterized by damage to the nerves, resulting in symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness. This damage can affect nerves throughout the body and oftentimes symptoms are in the hands and feet.
Most commonly people feel these symptoms with prolonged sitting, driving and laying down. It may lead to various symptoms depending on which nerves are involved. Most commonly we see disorders that fall under the umbrella of what is called “Compressive Neuropathy”. The mechanism is the same throughout disorders: an object obstructing a nerve and preventing that nerve and disrupting the nerve signal to a muscle or other soft tissue. Sciatica, carpal tunnel and tarsal tunnel are all common dysfunctions that dwell under the compressive neuropathy umbrella. Here’s a simplified breakdown:
Types of Neuropathy: There are several types of neuropathy, including peripheral neuropathy (affecting nerves outside the brain and spinal cord), diabetic neuropathy (associated with diabetes), autonomic neuropathy (affecting the nerves that control involuntary functions like heart rate and digestion), and others.
Causes: Neuropathy can have many causes, including nerve obstruction by a spinal disc, diabetes, traumatic injuries, autoimmune diseases, certain medications, vitamin deficiencies, and genetic factors.
Symptoms: Symptoms of neuropathy can vary depending on the type and location of nerve damage. Common symptoms include pain (which can be sharp, burning, or stabbing), numbness or tingling sensations, muscle weakness, sensitivity to touch, and problems with coordination or balance.
Diagnosis: Diagnosing neuropathy typically involves a medical history review, physical examination, and possibly tests such as nerve conduction studies, electromyography (EMG), blood tests to check for underlying conditions, and imaging studies like MRI or CT scans.
Treatment: Treatment for neuropathy aims to relieve symptoms, slow disease progression, and address any underlying causes of the symptoms. Spinal decompression has been shown to be highly effective clinical solution to neuropathy that is caused by a mechanical origin i.e.: disc bulge in the neck and/or low back causing numbness and tingling in the hand or foot).
Prognosis: The outlook for neuropathy varies depending on the underlying cause, the extent of nerve damage, and how well symptoms are managed. Some types of neuropathy may improve with treatment, while others may be chronic and require ongoing management.
